About New Mills Festival Art Trail & Big Weekend

The Art Trail forms part of the New Mills Festival which takes place across New Mills, Derbyshire from the 13th to the 29th September 2019.

The Art Trail turns the town into a gallery. In 2017 more than seventy local businesses and venues signed up to host artists' work in their windows and premises.

Artists can apply for one or more of the opportunities below.

Submission is FREE. However, there is a £20 charge* made to successful artists for inclusion in the Art Trail promotional material.

Art in Windows

To submit an entry to take part in the New Mills Festival Art Trail and have your work chosen to be displayed in one of the available windows, SEE FURTHER DETAILS HERE

Larger window Display Spaces

Alongside applications from artists for the smaller shop windows the organisers are particularly interested in hearing from artists who would like to tackle one of the bigger display spaces, either for a larger installation or for a display from a group. Please email to discuss your ideas. There is a small materials budget available for these spaces. More information HERE

Pop Up Venues

Pop Up Venues can be open throughout the two-week period and/or during the Big Weekend. Spaces can be for displays or exhibitions and manned or unmanned

Big Weekend

The Art Trail includes a "Big Weekend", which sees artists and venues across New Mills open their doors to host pop-up exhibitions, open studios, workshops and demonstrations, and arts and crafts markets. The Big Weekend is timed to coincide with the hugely popular Lantern Procession finale, which attracts an audience of more than 14,000 to the town.

curated Pop Up Venues Available for BIG WEEKEND 2019

New Mills Festival Art Show at Spring Bank Arts Centre - this is an opportunity to display a more substantial amount of work. This space is curated by New Mills Festival. The display must be manned by the artist. More information HERE

New Mills Heritage Centre - this is an exhibition opportunity for the duration of the Art Trail. You will be given a space in the venue to set up a display. This space is curated by New Mills Festival. Group applications for this venue are welcomed. More information HERE

The Perspective of Ability - this is an exhibition of art created by people with a disability, at St George’s Parish Hall, Church Road, New Mills. More information HERE

Providence United Reformed Church - this is an an exhibition or display space for group applications. More information HERE


The Art Trail is not themed, however the theme for the New Mills Festival this year is "The Elements - Earth, Air, Fire and Water". Proposals which respond to this topic will be welcomed.
