LANTERN MAKING

Training
Thursday 10
, 7 - 9pm
Library Lecture Room, New Mills Town Hall
Full training will be given in how to make lanterns. Experienced and new helpers welcome. This event is free but we would expect you to come and share your expertise at a minimum of three Lantern Workshops.

Lantern Workshops
All workshops take place at the Town Hall, through the rear entrance door off Aldersgate.

Saturday 12, 10am - 12noon & 2 – 4pm

Saturday 19, 10am - 12noon & 2 – 4pm
Sunday 20, 10am - 12noon & 2 – 4pm
Make your own lantern for the famous Lantern Procession. A team of trained helpers is on hand to help you. A minimum of two sessions will be needed to complete a lantern. This year’s theme is ‘Celebration’. All are welcome. Children bring an adult with you. Each session costs £1 per person. Refreshments on sale.

Walks are led by members of the Ramblers Association, New Mills Group.
They are FREE but there is a shared transport scheme.

Saturday 19: Over t’Moors to Paradise – 7/8 miles – moderate – led by Bruce Fairbanks
Meet 9.00am train from New Mills Central to Manchester and tram to Bury.
Sunday 20: Flint Hill – 16 miles- moderate/strenuous – led by Lewis Chadwick
Meet 9.00am Torr Top Car Park, New Mills.
Sunday 27: Mellor – 8miles – moderate – led by Susan Bailey
Meet 9.45 am Torr Top Car Park, New Mills.

Saturday 12; Open Day at Ollersett Avenue Allotments Site :1pm – 4 pm
Access from Ollersett Avenue, or via footpath from Sett Valley Trail.
Come and see how to grow vegetables on an allotment plot. New Mills Allotment and Gardening Society will give you a tour around the site. If you are hoping to start growing vegetables yourself this is a great opportunity to pick up some handy gardening tips. Light refreshments available. FREE

Saturday 12: Singing Workshop with Helen and the Lovenotes
St James’ Church and Arts Centre, Spring Bank: 2pm - 4pm
£3.50 (No concessions or discounts). Attendance at evening concert for workshop participants
will be at concessionary rate, with discount available to members.

Saturday 12: Band in the Park
High Lea Park, New Mills at 5pm.
Come and enjoy Brass Bands from the High Peak.
Easy listening with popular appeal.
FREE. Some seating or bring your own.

Sunday 13: Fun Run
From New Mills Leisure Centre, 10.30 am: registration from 10.00am
Help your fitness and a enjoy a run from the Leisure Centre along the Sett Valley Trail either to Birch Vale and back
or to Hayfield and back. Prizes!
Entry Fee: £2 – either in advance at the Leisure Centre or on the day.

Sunday 13: Festival Sports Day
New Mills Sports Club Ground, Church Road from 11am.
Tennis Competition from 11am, Bowls Challenge from 1.30pm, and New Mills versus Hayfield 20/20 match for the Mike Oliver Memorial Trophy from 1pm. Refreshments available. Spectators welcome. FREE

Sunday 13: The World in our Tent
New Mills Cricket Club 11.00am - 2.00pm
Step back in time and discover the fascinating mysteries of the Camera Obscura. High Peak Community Arts invite you to come inside their lovely hand-built yurt transformed for a day into a Camera Obscura! FREE sessions every half-hour but limited places so booking advised. 01663 744516

New Mills Community Orchard, off High Lea Park: 2 – 4 pm
Join us to celebrate New Mills Apple Day with apple related fun and frolics for all the family. FREE

Monday 14: Royal Celebrations Through the Ages
Library Lecture Room, New Mills Town Hall 8.00pm
A talk by Barbara Matthews with examples from her china collection of royal memorabilia.
Hosted by New Mills Wives Group. £1 Refreshments included.

Tuesday 15: Bookchat : Hatch, Match and Dispatch
Bring along, or just come and listen to and discuss, stories and poems about rites of passage.
New Mills Library 7.30 – 9pm. Enter through side door. Refreshments. All welcome.

Wednesday 16: Whist Drive
New Mills Volunteer Centre, Union Road. 7.30pm
An evening for card players in convivial surroundings.
Tickets £3 from the Centre, to include coffee and biscuits.

Thursday 17: Turkish Evening
Gioia Mia Café, Market St, 7.30pm. Come and enjoy authentic food and music at Ali’s Café. £9 (wine, sweet and coffee extra). Please book early in advance at the café.

Friday 18: Boka Halat Concert & Ceilidh
Low Leighton Methodist Church. Concert 7.30pm followed by dance with caller at 8.15pm. Suitable for adults, and families with children 8yrs+. A Live and Local Event. Refreshments available. £7 and £5 concessions. Tickets in advance 01663 744907 or from the Derbyshire Building Society.

Friday 18: Natural History Society Talk
‘Wildlife of Long-Disused Railway Tracks’ - Mr J. Sears Library Lecture Room, New Mills Town Hall, 7.30 pm

Saturday 19: Near and Far from Sweden.
Providence United Reformed Church, Mellor Road, New Mills, 7.30pm
An entertaining programme of Swedish folk songs, English renaissance music and classics, performed with warmth and humour. Rita Saxmark, soprano & Sabina Agnes, classical guitarist in concert.

Art Theatre, Jodrell Street, New Mills. 7.30pm. James Ruffell and The Pontiacs Tribute to the King of Rock and Roll with live backing singers and dancers. Music from the 20s, 30s and 40s. A real trip down memory lane!

Monday 21: The Mills of New Mills – A festival talk by Derek Brumhead
New Mills Town Hall, 7.30pm
Hosted by the New Mills Local History Society. Admission FREE.
Cheese and Wine provided by New Mills Town Council. Publications will be on sale.

Monday 21: New Drama: ‘Not in Our Lifetime’
Providence Church, Mellor Road. 7.00pm
An original play by the Hangout Drama Group. Tickets £3 or £2 concessions.
(Two girls are bored in an air raid shelter tour. A plan to play a trick on the group goes wrong and the girls find themselves locked in for the night. Ghosts from the past come back to relive the Manchester Blitz of Christmas 1941 and the girls are forced to take stock of their own lives as they compare the two lifestyles). Tickets available from the Derbyshire Building Society or on the door.

Tuesday 22: Festival Quiz Night
Royal Oak Inn, Market Street, 7.30pm for 8pm
Test your brain power and memory with another of our regular quiz nights. Teams of up to six people.
Prizes! Raffle! Entry: £2 per person. Proceeds shared between the Community Bonfire and the Festival.

Tuesday 22: The Artists of Disney – An illustrated talk by Robin Allan
St James’ Church and Arts Centre, Spring Bank 7.30pm.
£5 and £4 concessions. This is a Friends of St James’ event.

Friday25: A Concert of Organ Music – with the irrepressible, internationally renowned organist, Gordon Stewart.

Friday September 25: Comedy night
At Chalkers off A6 Newtown, 8 pm

Saturday 26: Torrs Hydro Guided Tours
Come and learn about the innovative Hydro-electric scheme in the Torrs.
Meet at Archie the Archimedes Screw in the Torrs, New Mills.
Guided tours at 1.00 pm and 2.30 pm. FREE

Saturday 26: Chrysanthemum & Dahlia Show
New Mills Town Hall, Spring Bank, 2.30 – 5pm
Come and admire the skills of our local flower exhibitors. Refreshments, tombola etc. Blooms will be on sale at 5pm.

Saturday 26: Lantern Procession
Meet in the park below New Mills Central Station. Procession moves off at 7.30pm
Come on a magical lantern procession in the Torrs, walk over the famous Millennium Bridge flanked by impressive fire sculptures and see hundreds of hand-made lanterns lighting up the evening.
Bring your own lantern if you have one, or just join in the procession. Ends at Newtown Recreation Ground with live music and a fantastic fireworks display at 8.40pm.
Please do not enter The Torrs except below Central Station and keep going in one direction.
FREE - bucket collection – please give generously to support the Festival.

Sunday 27: New Mills Music Festival 1 - 10pm – (Gates open 12.30)

*** Please note there is a change of venue for this event. It will now be held at Newtown Recreation Ground.

Sunday 27 September: Last Night of the Proms
Art Theatre, Jodrell Street, New Mills. 7.30pm
An evening’s concert with the High Peak Orchestra, with Soloists and Chorus from the Operatic Society. This event will mirror the famed last night of the proms to close the New Mills Festival 2009.
The first half of the concert will include Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and after the interval Film Music, The Dambuster’s March, Coates London Suite, Pomp and Circumstance, Henry Wood’s Traditional Sea Shanties, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem - with participation from audience, soloists and the chorus from New Mills AODS. An evening not to be missed.

To celebrate the New Mills Festival, New Mills Football club will be offering discounted admission and/or other incentives for home league matches in September.
